Why you need to visit Wanaka this Winter

Winter in New Zealand runs from the beginning of June until the end of August, and the average daily temperature in Wānaka over winter sits at around 10°C. Winter in Wānaka is magical with activities and attractions to suit every visitor. Come for the snow sports, the outdoors, the culture, the tourist attractions, the food, the shopping or just the views! Below are our top reasons why you need to visit Wānaka this winter.

  1. The stunning scenery! Yes, we could say this about every season, however there is something about the beautiful snow-capped mountains reflected on the calm, glassy lake that is truly captivating. The temperatures have dropped; however, the sun is often shining, without the wind we often find ourselves avoiding in spring and summer. Be ready to take a photo or three!
  1. Skiing and snowboarding – naturally. Wānaka is home to three fantastic ski resorts – Treble Cone, Cardrona, and Snow Farm. Each resort offers something different, whether you are a first-timer, a seasoned pro or a cross-country skier. August is our favourite month for reliable snow (and powder if that is what drives you!), and September for warmer spring weather and fun soft snow conditions. Heli-skiing is also an option for those looking for a once in a lifetime experience – big mountains, lots of snow and a ride in a helicopter? Exhilarating.
  1. The après-ski! After a big day on the mountain, it’s time to head back down into the lowlands to enjoy some après. With everything from character filled historic pubs, craft brew bars to lively cocktail bars – Wānaka has après down pat. A mulled wine and a plate of something warm and comforting to eat is appealing to every visitor after a busy day of activity, so you don’t have to be a skier or snowboarder to enjoy some Wānaka après!
  1. The indoor attractions. Many of our guests are non-skiers, and Wānaka has plenty to offer those who seek more indoor based activities during the coldest season. Challenge yourself at Puzzling World, view the extensive collection of vintage cars, aircraft and toys at the National Transport & Toy Museum, or step out of reality and into Realm, NZ’s largest fully immersive virtual reality experience! If food and shopping are more your style, we have you covered there too. Wānaka’s many cafes, bars, restaurants and food trucks offer something for everyone. After a bite to eat, wander the shops and you will find art galleries, boutique fashion stores, outdoor shops, bookstores, and much more. Plenty to get your dose of retail therapy!
