Things to do.
An outdoor paradise.
Located at Lake Wānaka's southern end and encircled by mountains, Wānaka is an outdoor haven. It’s the gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park, featuring huts and trails from short walks to challenging climbs. The Rob Roy Glacier track, a 3-4 hour return walk through beech forest to an active glacier, is among the South Island’s best day hikes.
Get hooked.
If you would like to take full advantage of the superb fly fishing opportunities available in the area, then Southern Rivers Fly Fishing Guides can expertly show you the very best spots to ensure a memorable and successful experience.
Explore Wanaka and Beyond.
Mou Waho Island, one of Lake Wānaka’s hidden gems, is a predator-free sanctuary for native birds and trees. Join Eco Wanaka Adventures for their Eco Lake Cruise & Island Walk, where you can even plant a native tree and see the island’s famous “lake on top of an island.”
Back on the mainland, enjoy a jet boat ride through the stunning Matukituki Valley into Mt Aspiring National Park with Wanaka River Journeys, including a short guided nature walk.
Central Otago is world-famous for its Pinot Noir and boutique vineyards — perfect for a relaxed and tasty wine tour.
With its dry, sunny climate, Wānaka is made for the outdoors — from rock climbing with Wanaka Rock to exploring mountain bike trails for every level.
Kick back and relax.
If you’re after something a little more relaxed, wander over to Cinema Paradiso — a true local institution. Settle into one of their quirky sofas, enjoy a local wine or beer, and don’t miss the freshly baked cookies at intermission — they’re famous for good reason!
Or, if you’d like to explore a bit more, you could join a Lord of the Rings tour to visit some of the stunning filming locations around the region. Golfers will love a round at the beautiful local 18-hole course, where every swing comes with a view worth remembering.
